How to Take a Relative Humidity Measurement Using the IC736700

Sling Psychrometers are known for their low-cost, portability, minimal maintenance requirements, and ease-of-use. The IC736700 Sling Psychrometer is no exception. This psychrometer allows users to obtain fast and accurate humidity readings anywhere, without the need for batteries or cumbersome calibrations. This psychrometer comes supplied with an onboard water reservoir and humidity chart, which makes it ideal for indoor and outdoor applications.

Figure 1 Watch an Instrument Choice unbox and demonstrate how to measure relative humidity using the IC736700 Sling Psychrometer here.

How to Take a Relative Humidity Measurement Using the IC736700 Sling Psychrometer

You will need:

  • The IC736700 Sling Psychrometer
  • Enough water to fill the meters reservoir
  • Relative Humidity conversion table

How to Take a Measurement

  1. Open the reservoir cap and fill the reservoir with water.
  2. Once filled and the wick is saturated, close the chamber lid.
  3. Touch the outside wick at the end of the thermometer to ensure it is also wet.
  4. Take your psychrometer to the environment you wish to measure and whirl the psychrometer rapidly in the air for 20-seconds.
  5. After 20-seconds has elapsed, stop spinning and record the wet and dry bulb temperatures immediately.

    How to Calculate Relative Humidity

  6. The wet-bulb depression value must be determined to calculate relative humidity. To do this, simply subtract the measured wet-bulb reading from the dry bulb reading.
  7. Use the relative humidity chart to find the dry bulb temperature value on the horizontal axis. Remember: this is the value taken directly from the psychrometer.
  8. Find the calculated wet-bulb depression value on the vertical axis.
  9. Triangulate the two readings to find the relative humidity percentage result.
  10. Remember to repeat measurements for greater accuracy.

IC TIP: Dry Bulb Temperature – Wet Bulb Temperature = Wet Bulb Depression Value

Conclusion

The IC736700 Sling Psychrometer is a low-cost, low maintenance, and easy-to-use device that allows users to obtain fast and accurate humidity readings anywhere – without the need for batteries. This meter is ideal for fieldwork, environmental studies, laboratories, storerooms, and educational purposes.
