A common trait among data loggers is that they all need specific software to allow the user to interpret and analyze their recorded data. Most data loggers would not function without their own software installed in a remote computer station, while other types, such as pulse loggers, are reliant on their own software to make sense of the data they recorded. Only some USB loggers maybe less reliant to software compared to others if they can directly export their data as spreadsheets. While most data loggers would have an installer included in the package, supplemental software may be purchased for additional features and functions not present in the main program.
Additional cables are necessary especially in situations where there is a need to connect multiple sensors to a single data logger where multi-channel data loggers are unavailable. Data cables are also needed when connecting a data logger to another set of instruments for monitoring. Additional cables may also become needed when connecting the data loggers to cover a larger area such as soil moisture data loggers. Specialized cables are also needed in some models that needs the data logger to be connected directly to a computer.
