Atago Brix Refractometers, some of the Best Refractometers for food

Refractometers are devices that can be used to determine sugar levels in food and beverages. Refractometers are a proven food quality management tool in this industry. Applications vary from checking fresh produce on the farm, measuring Brix throughout the production process, and assessing quality before purchasing.

The Atago brand offers a specialised yet comprehensive range of refractometers for food. They are well known for their quality and accuracy. In this article, we will spotlight some Atago refractometers designed for measuring the Brix percentage in food.

About Atago

Since its beginnings in 1940, Atago has been a world leader in the research and development of refractometers and other optoelectronic equipment.Products manufactured by Atago are in use across a variety of industries, from food and beverage to petrochemical and metalworking. Atago is renowned for its refractometers, and it is continually developing and refining refractometer technology.

About Refractometers

Refractometers for food are used to determine the Brix. Brix is a scale used to measure the sugar content of an aqueous solution. One degree Brix is 1 gram of sucrose in 100 grams of solution and represents the strength of the solution as percentage by mass.

How do refractometers determine Brix?

When light enters a liquid, it changes direction; this is refraction. A refractometer operates based on the physical principle of refraction. Light will generally refract more when travelling through a liquid with dissolved or suspended solids than it would if it were travelling through a sample such as distilled water.

Refractometers take the refraction angles and correlate them to an already established refractive index. There is a direct relationship between the Refractive index and Brix. Your device will either display the results in Brix, refractive index, or sometimes, both.

Why use a refractometer to measure food?

The sugar levels within foods can affect the quality, nutritional value, taste, and the potential to produce alcohol within foods, which is why so many farmers, producers, and purchasers choose to use these devices.

Examples of Atago Refractometers for Food

Instrument Choice scientists have assembled four great examples of Atago refractometers for determining Brix in food and beverage. These include an optical meter, two limited range meters, and one wide range example.
