The Problem:
You are looking to setup an instantaneous weather station to monitor wind speed, direction, temperature, barometric pressure and humidity for field studies. You don’t want something bulky that requires a significant amount of time to set up and that takes up a large amount of space in your vehicle. You need it to log for a short period and then transfer it to your PC. So, which option do you use?

The Solution:
For these situations we recommend the Kestrel-4500-BT. This is a handheld portable weather station that will allow you to measure the following parameters:
  • Heading (true & magnetic)
  • Wind direction
  • Crosswind
  • Headwind/tailwind
  • Altitude
  • Pressure trend
  • Barometric pressure
  • Wet bulb temperature
  • Relative humidity in %
  • Heat stress index
  • Dewpoint
  • Wet bulb temperature
  • Density altitude
  • Wind chill
  • Air, water, and snow temperature °F or °C
  • Current, average, and maximum air velocity
We then advise mounting the station on Kestrel Collapsible tripod with the Kestrel Vane mount as per the setup below:

This setup can be mounted in a few minutes and packs down into two small carry bags, making it easy to transport and use when required.

The Kestrel-4500-BT also features Bluetooth connectivity which allows for the transfer of data to a Bluetooth capable PC meaning that when it is setup on its tripod it can be sending data to your PC for you to view. It also allows you to log data so that this can be viewed at a later date if desired. There is an example showing the inerface displaying real time data on a PC:

This makes it the ideal setup for field studies where size, time of setup and functonality are parmamount. If you need assistance selecting a weather station or an anemometer for your requirements please feel free to contact one of our friendly Scientists via email or phone on 1300 737 871.

For years our customers have been asking for wind direction along with wind speed. New for 2007, the Kestrel 4500 does just that with its built in digital compass. But it doesn’t stop there. It also calculates crosswind and headwind/tailwind with reference to a user-set target heading, and stores the information along with all the other environmental readings in its 1400 data point memory.
