Shock loggers are data loggers that autonomously monitor and record vibrations, shakes, impact, jolts or any other sudden form of movement. Shock loggers are primarily used to monitor shipments in transit, especially in cargo trucks and airplanes. These instruments allow distributers and manufacturers to monitor transit goods to ensure that they are transported under ideal conditions. Shock loggers record when any of the described movements occur, recording its time of occurrence, date and in some models, the duration of the recorded movement.
There are different types of shock loggers available based on additional features depending on the need of the manufacturers and the degree of movement they can measure. Some shock loggers can measure temperature and humidity for sensitive items that need to be transported under strict environmental conditions. Other shock loggers can also measure pressure levels for items that need to be transported in vacuum containers such as certain food products and raw materials. Other features include additional functions for measuring strain, moisture and acceleration.
Majority of shock loggers are able to monitor movement using the 3 axis measurement. Under this system, any form of movement such as vibration and jolts are measure based on how much they move the object from three observed plots on a grid (x,y,z). More complex shock loggers can measure movement across six axes, also measuring roll, pitch and yaw in addition to the three basic axes.
