There are many applications for surface roughness testing which include workshop testing and QC, production testing and maintenance testing of raw and machined parts. The reason for testing surface roughness is that rough surfaces can wear more quickly; however smoother surfaces are more expensive to produce, so depending on your requirements, you need to know when the surface is within acceptable specification tolerances.

A common example is used in maintaining and repairing rail tracks, where too rough can lead excessive wear. But if you go too smooth, then that is expensive and it can also be very difficult for a train to start moving or stop.

Also widely used in machine shops for checking prepared surfaces of components. Just because the surface is shiny, does not mean it is low roughness.

The RTR-1000 is designed with a protruding stylus which makes it usable on curved surfaces and some of the more difficult to access, such as recessed or stepped areas, like inside automotive cylinder bores and water jackets or o-ring grooves

It has a back lit LCD screen and comes with a calibration specimen. Data is managed wirelessly via Bluetooth with the provided dongle and CD-ROM software.

Protruding stylus
