Types of Atago Refractometers

Are you looking to determine Brix, specific gravity, salinity, moisture, or serum protein within a substance? Atago manufacturers refractometers for all these parameters and much, much more.

This article will take you on a guided tour of the six main varieties of refractometers produced by Atago, from small optical meters to meters for professional and industrial use.

Atago Refractometers

Established for almost 80 years, Atago is arguably the world leader in manufacturing refractometers. They produce a vast range of refractometers that from small optical pens to professional benchtop meters and industrial quality meters.

About Refractometers

Refractometry can measure a liquid’s purity, the concentration of dissolved substances, and the composition of compounds in the medium.

A refractometer measures using the principle of light refraction through liquids. When light passes from air into a liquid medium, it will slow down and bend. The extent of the bend will depend on the total amount of dissolved solids within the substance. Refractometers capture this and convert the results into specific measurements.

The principle of refractometry can be used to determine Brix, Specific Gravity, Serum Protein, Salinity, Moisture, Ethanol, or Hydrogen Peroxide within samples, to name a few!

Types of Atago Refractometers

Atago Refractometers cover all aspects of the refractometer market. Using some specific examples, Instrument Choice scientists have prepared a brief profile of each of the six main types of Atago meters.

1. Optical Pen Refractometers

Go battery-free with optical pen refractometers. These meters are easy-to-use and get fast results. Place on the prism the substance you wish to measure, close the plastic lid, and look through the lens to view the results. Some more sophisticated optical pen refractometers have automatic temperature compensation (ATC), which takes the guesswork in getting results. (See our article on why ATC is essential!)

Pocket refractometers are the most popular style of the Atago refractometer designs. They are simple to use, accurate, robust, and super portable. They are supplied with the most variations and that can measure almost anything.

There is a pocket refractometer to measure: Brix, Brix-Acidity, Human urine specific gravity, Brix in fatty or dark samples, coffee strength, hydrogen peroxide, propylene glycol, blood serum protein, refractive index, dog and cat urine specific gravity, soil moisture, and the water content in honey.

3.  Digital Pen Refractometers

Digital pen refractometers you can dip, touch, or stir are a convenient and straightforward way to obtain results. The sturdy design makes these devices IP67 water and dustproof yet small enough to fit in your pocket and be taken almost anywhere.

There is a digital pen refractometer to measure: Brix, sodium chloride, salinity, ethanol, dried fruit moisture and, urine specific gravity.

4.IR Brix Refractometers

A new addition to the Instrument Choice range is the selection of IR Brix Refractometers. Forget the mess of cutting up fruit or squeezing samples onto a glass face. Place the meter on the surface of the fruit, press start, and obtain a reading, simples!

There is a Brix IR refractometer to measure: peaches, Asian pears, cherries, grapes, cherry tomatoes, and apples. IR Brix refractometers are perfect for the growers, buyers, and sellers of fruit!

5.  Benchtop and Digital Automatic Refractometers

For laboratory precision and accuracy, you can’t go past a benchtop meter or digital meter. Designed for ease of use, they sacrifice portability for accuracy and other features such as connectivity, temperature control, limit setting options, and more.

There is a benchtop or digital meter to measure: Brix, refractive index, hydrogen peroxide, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, salinity, dimethylformamide.

6.  Digital Immersion Refractometers

Digital immersion refractometers are built especially for mounting on the side of containers such as tanks, drums, or pots. Designed to provide real-time readings for all types of liquids, from cleaning to food and beverage. Digital immersion meters come with a variety of probe lengths that are designed to suit tanks and containers of all sizes.

There is a digital immersion refractometer to measure: Brix

Conclusion

With such an extensive range, it’s clear to see why Atago is the market leader in the refractometer market. Within the range, they boast refractometers that can measure almost any parameter and a meter to fit practically any application. You can browse the full Atago range by clicking here.
