How to Take a Single Button Measurement Using the IC-CHLPLS Chlorophyll Plant Meter

The chlorophyll content of a plant is an excellent indicator of its health. The IC-CHLPLS is a powerful, handheld, easy-to-use plant meter for non-invasive measurements of the relative chlorophyll content of green leaf plants. This instrument incorporates a variety of innovative features that makes it suitable for advanced scientific use and research. At the same time, its intelligent design makes it simple to capture accurate relative chlorophyll measurements with the push of a button.

Measurement Note 1: The measuring window within the sensor is a circle with a diameter of 4mm and an area of around 13mm2. The distance between the centre of the window and the edge is 13mm.

Be careful to place samples or small or thin leaves (e.g., grass) under the meter's detector window. Generally, the leaf should cover the measuring area. However, if the leaf is particularly thin or little, it could help to add some opaque black tape on its sides to define the area not covered by the leaf.

  1. Start by installing two AA batteries. To perform this, you will need a small screwdriver. Unscrew the battery cavity cover, insert the two includes AA batteries, then replace and secure the lid.
  2. To turn the device on, press any of the four buttons.
  3. After the device is powered up, the message 'No Name' will appear on the screen. The device is now ready to take a measurement.
  4. Insert the leaf you wish to measure into the device's aperture, ensuring it is covering the measuring area, then press the enter key.
  5. Immediately your results will appear on the screen. You will see the chlorophyll measurement value, the API index (see Measurement Note 2 for a short explanation), and the measurement number on the left.
  6. For more accurate results, repeat your readings.

Measurement Note 2: What is API?
API (atLEAF Performance Index) is a device-related index that can simply and directly summarise the measurement reading. For the atLEAF CHL PLS, the API index is calculated as the linear interpolation between an interval of measurement values, giving result values from 0 to 100. The default values for the measurement interval minimum is 15, and the maximum is 65. CHL values under 15 will result in an API of 0, and CHL values greater than 65 will give API=100. This index can be disabled in settings.

Conclusion

The IC-CHLPLS Chlorophyll Plant Meter makes measuring chlorophyll a straightforward and non-invasive process. These attributes are beneficial in commercial and scientific environments. Advanced features and a simple one-button press measurement, have helped make this plant meter a popular tool in universities, research laboratories, horticulture, and agriculture.
