The DST magnetic is a small data logger / archival tag that measures and records earth's magnetic field strength (in three directions), tilt (in three directions), acceleration, temperature and depth. This makes the DST magnetic an effective tool to track the movement of fishes and other marine life.

Geolocation loggers are designed to record the geographic location of an object or animal. These loggers need to be small and lightweight so they can easily be attached to the object or animal being tracked. Earlier models would only have limited storage for data, as well as limited battery life. But technological advancements in both areas have since improved these capacities, making it possible for these devices to record and store data for longer periods of time.
Light level geolocators use primarily light level data, as well as other parameters such as temperature and water immersion, to record its location. Recorded light level data overtime is used to determine the latitude and longitude of the locator. Common application of this type of geolocation loggers is with bird migration to monitor the areas that migratory birds used during migration. Most models store their data in internal memory that can be collected for analysis.
GPS loggers are another type of geolocation loggers and are more accurate than light level geolocators because they use satellite technology to determine their geographical location. GPS loggers are generally larger than light level geolocators are used to track people and bigger animals and objects.
