The IC736740 Mason's Hygrometer uses a safe and easy-to-read red liquid in place of mercury. This thermometer senses ambient temperature, and humidity calculation is straightforward. 

For outdoor temperature readings, read the dry-bulb temperature. For humidity calculations, read the dry-bulb temperature and the wet-bulb temperature (i.e. the bulb constantly kept wet by the built-in reservoir). You calculate humidity by comparing the two readings on the included chart.
