Laboratory mixers are used to mix, emulsify and homogenize various solutions and their substrates. Many mixers have varying capacity, anywhere from 1 ml up to 10-12 liters in heavy duty models. Important attributes that distinguish the different mixer models are the container capacity, the produced liquid viscosity, torque and horsepower of the mixer itself, the rotational speed of the propeller and the power supply. In most cases, different applications require different applications, specifically on the required viscosity of the resulting solution. Generally, mixers that have specific viscosity settings are more costly than other models.
Shakers are almost similar to mixers and are primarily used to stir liquids. A typical shaker has a large and flat board area that moves horizontally to simulate the stirring action with a rod. The liquids are held in beakers or flasks and are secured over the board of the shaker. Often, shakers are left running depending on the required consistency of the solution. In most cases, shakers have been replaced by magnetic stirrers, and are usually only used when there is a need to stir large volumes of liquids. More advance models would have additional features such as built-in incubators to further allow scientists to control other factors such humidity and temperature in stirring the solutions.
